Accessible Meeting Places on Vancouver Island

While travelling around Vancouver Island I have been discovering other places that are accessible. I will list them here, as I discover them.
Once more... this is a work in progress, it takes a lot of time to get out and about. Your patience and understanding is appreciated!

Bowser

The Bean Counter #108 Magnolia Court, 6996 Island Highway, Bowser BC 250-757-9565
Delicious beverages and delightful light meals.

Chemainus

Red Rooster Cafe, 8432 TransCanada Highway (at Mt. Sicker Rd), Chemainus 250-246-3777
What a great place to stop and have a fantastic and filling meal! The cafe is very clean, spacious and inviting. Check out the numerous roosters that adorn the top shelving. Except for the original two, all are from the many repeat customers who have brought them in to their favourite cafe.
The Chemainus Theatre Festival 9737 Chemainus Road, Chemainus, 800-565-7738 or 250-246-9820
This famous play house has an excellent dining area and is in the heart of the Chemainus civic centre.
The Mount Brenton Golf Course Restaurant 2816 Henry Road, Chemainus, 250-246-4948
This was a surprise discovery when the Chemainus Theatre did not have room at their dining room. We were in for a treat!

Errington

North Island Wildlife Recovery Association 1240 Leffler Road, Errington, (near Coombs, follow the signs on Highway 4A -Alberni Highway). The North Island Wildlife Recovery Association is a non-profit organization that cares for the well-being of Vancouver Island wildlife and strives to provide public education. They have worked hard to provide accessible space and ease of access to the majority of their areas. Run mostly by volunteers, the NIWRA is an excellent place to discover and explore. Bring a lunch and enjoy it in the newly created picnic area!

Mill Bay

Catrina's Grill, #170 - 2720 Mill Bay Road, Mill Bay 250-743-7277
A perfect stop before or after the Malahat Highway, this cozy family run restaurant has an accessible washroom tucked in behind the bar. The food is delicious and affordable with friendly service. Absolutely worth the stop, this restaurant is a great place to check out on your next road trip.

Nanaimo

Longwood Brew Pub, 5775 Turner Road, Nanaimo, 250-729-8225
From a deliciously rich Russian Stout to a nice light Two Penny Ale, this brewery crafts fine beer and serves delicious food. The lower level is in the style of a neighbourhood pub with off sales available. The upper level is a nice comfortable restaurant, equally appropriate for a lunch with friends or a special dinner.
Nanaimo Port Authority, 104 Front Street, Nanaimo, 250-754-5053
This municipal Marina has had extensive upgrades to make it accessible and a jewel in the harbour. It combines walkways for citizens and visitors to Nanaimo, with fresh seafood and fish available from the docks, coffee shops, a tea house and close proximity to downtown with all of its amenities.
The Nest Bistro 77 Skinner St Nanimo, 250-591-2721
Be sure to park in the adjacent parking lot as the restaurant is located in the middle of a very steep hill. The food is delicious, staff are friendly and delightful. On sunny days the patio is an inspired place to relax with good friends.
Zougla Mediterranean Grill, 2021 Estevan Road, Nanaimo, 250-716-3233
What a delicious surprise this family run restaurant was, including a huge ramp up to the entry, wide spaces and accessible washrooms. The food is prepared with care and attention to the enhancement of flavour. Just simply delightful!

Rocking Horse Pub, 2038 Sanders Road Nanoose Bay, 250-468-1735
On Northwest Bay Road between Nanoose Bay and Parksville, this traditional English Pub provides a delicious menu of appetizers, pub fare, and full course meals. Eat inside the sumptuous pub, decorated with rock and wood highlights, or settle outside and take in the working equine acerage and dizzying dance of hummingbirds on the deck area.

Parksville

Bread and Honey Food Company, #4 162 Harrison Avenue, Parksville, 250-586-1021
This cozy and charming café is nestled in a small strip mall off of the Alberni Highway in downtown Parksville. The delicious home made breads and food are lovingly made and artisitically presented. Food flavours are exceptional with local produce used where possible.
Mekong River -Fine Vietnamese Restaurant, 625 E Island Hwy., Parksville, 250 586-8000
A delicious surprise when meeting a friend for a supper. Easy access, great food and wonderful service.
Sandcastle Inn Motel, 374 West Island Highway, Parksville 250-248 -2334
Clean, efficient and affordable accommodation in Parksville. With a "walk-in" shower, grab bars, accesible washroom and room for an assistant. I could find few accessible accommodations in the Parksville Qualicum area, a surprising fact given the demographic of the area. The Sandcastle Inn, is easy to find, comfortable and very affordable. How delightful!
White Elephant Thai Cuisine 144 Weld St. Parksville, 250-586-6611
Plan to come early or reserve a spot. The parking can be tricky so expect to travel a little bit to get in. The food is devine and the portions are excellent for sharing. I discovered them through an online auction for Spinal Cord Injury BC (SCI-BC))... they had donated a gift certificate to their restuarant to support SCI-BC.. wow... kudos to them. .. another good reason to come back again and again!

Qualicum Bay

Lighthouse Country Regional Trail, Thanks to Lindsey for letting us know about this great accessible trail. From the website at the Regional District of Nanaimo:
"2.5 km of accessible woodland trail, part of the Lighthouse Country Regional Trail in Qualicum Bay and Bowser. This beautiful forest trail features over 150 m of raised boardwalk, benches, a picnic table, fish bridges, and wood carvings. The trail is designed specifically for wheelchair and medi-scooter users, as well as the visually impaired. "

DeeZ Bar & Grill, 3353 Island Highway West, Qualicum Beach, 250-752-8055
Friendly, accommodating and delightful staff begin your dining experience at DeeZ. The food is excellent, portions just perfect and price is very reasonable. My favourite is the Tuesday special - Dinosaur Bones - perfectly braised beef ribs, just delicious! Go early, or be sure to reserve well ahead of time. This is a very popular destination.

Victoria

Accent Inns 3233 Maple St. Victoria 250-475-7500
This has been my favourite place to go to when travelling to Victoria. With new renovations there is now only one accessible room (grab bars, wheelchair can get into bathroom, raised toilet, grab bars in bath.. bring your own bath seat...) so you need to book far in advance.
Cafe Brio 944 Fort St. Victoria, 250-383-0009.
This delightful restaurant features local fare from Vancouver Island in an intimate setting with excellent service. It is within walking distance of everything downtown. Perfect setting, delightful atmosphere, excellent food.
Inn at Laurel Point 680 Montreal St. Victoria, 250-386-8721.

Sandman Hotels - Victoria 2852 Douglas St, Victoria, 250-388-0788
Spacious accessible suites with a lot of room in the bathroom and multiple grab bars in the tub. We stumbled upon this looking for a place for a medical trip when it appeared that all the other places were full. Lucky us!
